Description
PROVASC ® is Amlodipine besilate, a long-acting calcium channel blocker. Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium antagonist (calcium ion antagonist or slow-channel blocker) that inhibits the transmembrane influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. It inhibits calcium ion influx across cell membranes selectively, with a greater effect on vascular smooth muscle cells than on cardiac muscle cells. Serum calcium concentration is not affected by amlodipine. Amlodipine is a peripheral arterial vasodilator that acts directly on vascular smooth muscle to cause a reduction in peripheral vascular resistance and reduction in blood pressure. Used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and for prophylaxis of angina. As calcium channel blockers, it blocks calcium thus causing the blood vessels to relax and widen so blood flow can more easily. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems.
Available in 5 mg and 10 mg Tablets in PVC/Alu blister strips of 10’s Box of 30’s.
